 Berner Niederlaufhund


The Berner Niederlaufhund is also known as Small Bernese Hound in the United States. It is a scent hound originated in Switzerland. It is one of the most powerful and best hunting dogs in the world which was used to hunt big game, which stands around 15 to 23 inches. It is a tri-colored hound, with a rough coat.

Around the 1900’s, when the hunting activities were limited to districts and since the hound used till then were too fast for this limited areas it was decided to establish a new type of hound. Using specimens of the medium sized Swiss Laufhund a smaller hunting dog was created and on July 1, 1905 the Swiss Niederlaufhund-Club (SNLC) was founded.



The Swiss Niederlaufhund is a brilliant hunting dog and can smell through difficult ground, thus it was used to find and follow a scent. The dog hunts independently and is also often used to chase and find wounded animals.



The height of these dogs lies between 35 and 43 cm for the males and 33 and 40 for the females. They are well-structured and are longer than they are tall, but appear to be square at a glance. The head is clearly shaped and noble also it has a responsive and vigilant expression. They have robust structure with strong. They carry the tail low at a calm pace and when they run it is a bit lifted. There are four different colour variations: the Berner Niederlaufhund, the Luzerner Niederlaufhund, the Jura Niederlaufhund and the Schwyzer Niederlaufhund.

This bred is short and wire haired with three colours: white, maroon and black. The base colour is white with big black spots. Maroon-coloured spots are found over the eyes and on the cheeks. It also has a black mantle. It has black pigmented skin under the dark coat and is patterned under the white coat.

Jura Niederlaufhund

This bred generally has a smooth coat. It is of deep black colour with maroon colored spots over the eyes, on the cheeks, on legs and chest. The base is of maroon colour with a black mantle. White spots are only on the chest and are not too big. The skin is dark pigmented under the black coat and paler under the spots.


Luzerner Niederlaufhund

This bred has a smooth and short coat. It has white, white and gray mottled or white and black mottled as its base colour. It has marooned coloured spots over the eyes and on the cheeks and also has black spots or mantle. The skin is dark pigmented under the black coat and paler under the mottled coat.

Schwyzer Niederlaufhund

This bred has a smooth coat. It has base colour of white colour with reddish coloured spots, it may also have some smaller spots and a mantle. The skin is dark grey coloured under the reddish coat and marbled under the white coat.



The Niederlaufhunde have a great sense of smell, they are fast, agile and passionate hunters which keep good track of the sent they are supposed to follow. They have pleasant voice. These dogs are friendly and courageous and never violent.
