Black and Tan Coonhound
The Black and Tan Coonhound, a breed of dog mainly used for trailing and treeing raccoons. This breed is a combination of Bloodhound, and the Black and Tan Virginia Foxhound breed. The Black and Tan Coonhound runs its game entirely by scent.
This dog is a descendent of the Talbot Hound which was found in medieval England in the eleventh century. Its origin is traced by the Foxhound to the Black and the Bloodhound and Tan Virginia Foxhound.
In year 1945, this breed became the only one amongst the six varieties of the Coonhound to be well known by the American Kennel Club, of the Hound Group. The other three varieties of Coonhound are the English Coonhound, the Bluetick Coonhound and the Treeing Walker Coonhound.
Black and Tan Coonhound has weight: 65–75 pounds (29–34 kg).
Height: 23–27 inches (58–69 cm).
It has a short, dense and glossy coat. It has hazel to brown coloured eyes, the ears are very long, thin and wide, are set low and far back on the dog’s head. The Black and Tan Coonhounds are similar to the Doberman’s and the Rottweiler’s. It barks loudly which has been described as a deep howl. The breed has muscular legs that are long in proportion to body length. The tail is set vaguely below the natural line of the back. The dog carries its tail at a right angle when it is alert or excited.
The Black and Tan Coonhound is an exemplary pet. It is amiable, calm, mellow and unobtrusive indoors. Outdoors, its instinct becomes hunting, and it can be complicated to turn it from a track after it starts trailing. The Black and Tan Coonhound is strong and stubborn; it is kind and tolerant with children. It is reserved in front of strangers and in their presence may howl and bay. It can run for miles even though it is pleased with a moderate jog or long walk. It can wander if it catches a scent, so a safe area is obligatory.
Coonhound dogs are courageous thus are proficient on the hunt for bear, deer, cougar and other big game although the hunting of antlered animals is being restricted. It leaves a general impression of power, agility and alertness in the dogs, it also defines it’s the ability to cover ground swiftly with powerful rhythmic pace.
Health and Care
Its coat needs occasional brushing and grooming. Most Coonhounds drool to some extent and the face may need regular swabbing. The dogs are generally healthy but there is a risk of hip dysplasia, ear cancer, ear infections and eye problems. Expected lifespan is 10–12 years.
