Introduction

The Cirneco dell’Etna, pronounced as “cheer-nec-ko” is a medium sized hunting dog with an elegant and slender, yet robust, build. They are keen hunters that work by scent, sight and hearing. The color of their coat ranges from light to dark shades of tan or chestnut with white markings. They were used for hunting rabbits. They prove to be excellent companions and watchdogs.

 

History

Many experts agree that the ancestors of Cirneco dell’Etna’s came from the Nile River valleys of ancient Egypt. They are present in Sicily for over 2,500 years sharing a common origin with the Pharaoh hound and other breeds throughout the Mediterranean basin. These dogs have been in Sicily for thousands of years. Many authors agree that the origins of the hound-type dog lie among ancient Egyptian prick-eared dogs.

The Cirneco dell’Etna has been most commonly used dog for hunting rabbits and small game near the volcano named Etna, which proved their superior abilities to work in most any environment. The Cirneco also known as the Sicilian Greyhound resemble a small Pharaoh hound, but it is a diverse breed originated in Italy, with triangle-shaped ears and his own color markings and tail shape.

 

Description

Circeco dell’Etna are dogs with soft head which is triangular, with long snout, thin, the nose has the skin color. It is a slim dog of medium size. They measure between 43-51cm and may weigh between 10 to 12 kilograms. They are elegant and strong dogs. Cirneco dell’Etna’s body is equal to the height at the withers. These dogs stand out from other breeds in that they are able to work for prolonged periods of time in scorching heat without extra food or water for long periods of time.

These dogs are long with flat skull. They possess straight nose bridge. These dogs have flat cheeks and thin, fine and tight lips. They have a keen sense of smell. They can work for hours without water and food.

 

Temperament

The Cirneco dell’Etna’s temperament has a strong, inquisitive, independent outlook. This breed is extremely outgoing, affectionate very friendly, and loving to toward his family and friends. They easily become compatible with children and do not warm up quickly to other strange pets.

They have a strong and independent temperament, which is important in enthusiastic hunting dogs. They are hunting dogs that are adapted to hunt over difficult terrain.

Care

Occasional brushing with a firm bristle brush is recommended for the Cirneco dell Etna. Bathing should be done only when necessary. This breed of dogs is not recommended for novice or first time dog owners. They have a strong and independent temperament.
