Once existing in large numbers all over Southern India, the Combai is currently limited to definite parts of Tamil Nadu and to some exceptional kennels. The original old descent Combai has become even very infrequent. It is often erroneous as a mixture of other breeds because of its huge appearance when compared with the Combai which is presented with the breeders.
The Combai is usually red brown or tan with a black mask, and with a shadowy line along the back. There are some differences between the Rajapalayam and the Combai breeds. The major ones are that the Combai possess more dominant jaws, often with a black mouth, much more hanging ears, a more fierce temper, and ainclination to be much more energetic than the rajapalayam.
