The Rat Terrier dog breed’s members are lovable little excavating escape performers who are true terriers. The dog is said to have given its name by President Theodore Roosevelt after his own terrier had eliminated the rat incursion.

The AKC does not identify the Rat Terrier breed — even though the UKC does — but breed clubs have well-defined the sizes.The Rat Terrier is a tiny and robust dog and should range between 13 to 16 inches in height. The UKC doesn’t have a stated weight for the breed as each discrete dog has a dissimilar weight for their height.The Decker Rat Terrier is somewhat bigger than the Rat Terrier and should lie amid 22 to 40 pounds with  male being16 to 19 inches in height while a female being in the range of 16 to 17 inches.The miniature Rat Terrier  weigh from 10 to 18 pounds and must not be bigger than 15 inches in height.The toy Rat Terrier’s weight should range from 5 to 10 pounds and he should possess height near approx. 12 inches.

Color and coat:

A Rat Terrier’s possesses a short and even fur with good density and shiny fur.  It can be seen it in numerous colors and combinations including red, lemon, blue, chocolate, black with tan or rust ,white, white and black or tan, and orange. Spots and dark colors are acceptable too. Normally speaking, all Rats have white patterns.

 

Temperament:

They are considered to be intelligent, cautious, and stubborn. This breed is a extrovert. They generally dislike strangers and are most warm up to visitors.If they’re not correctly socialized they will be acceptable with their family but they could become violent to foreigners and other creatures. They are also undeniably fearless, which can be a brilliant trait.

They prove to be a good family pet and Rat Terriers are astonishingly sensitive and instinctively retort to owners moods. They have a great craving to please, love praise, and will track you around the house. They are reared to work all day on the ranch.They need a lot of workout and if they don’t get it, their shrill little minds can turn deceitful to please themselves.

Care:

Crate train the Rat Terrier to leave the puppy out at the time he reaches maturity. Regardless of type, puppies discover, get into stuffs they shouldn’t, and also sometimes chew things which can harm them.

Never stick the Rat Terrier in a crate for the entire day. However it should be taken for a walk. It shouldn’t be permitted to spend more than a few hours at a time in his crate except when its asleep at night.

Recommended daily amount of high-quality dry food for the day :

  • Less than 10 pounds: 1/4 to 1/2 cup per day
  • for10-15 pounds 1/2 to 1 cup per day
  • for 20-30 pounds 3/4 to 1.5 cups per day
  • for 30-40 pounds 1.5 to 2 cups per day

Importantly for keeping Rat Terrier in good shape owner needs to measure his food and feed him twice a day rather than leaving food out all the time.

Health:

Rat Terriers are usually healthy; they’re prone to certain illnesses.

  1. Allergies: Allergies are very common ailment in the Rat Terrier. There are three main types of allergies:
  • food allergies( for what they eat)
  • contact allergies( caused by dog shampoos,bad bedding, flea powders and other chemicals)
  • inhalant allergies (caused as pollen, dust, and mildew)

Treatment varies according to the reason and may comprise of dietary restrictions, medications, and environmental changes.

  1. Patellar Luxation: This problem is seen in small dogs. Patellar luxation is a case of the knee joint sliding in and out of place, producing pain.
  2. Demodectic Mange:This condition is produced by the demodex mites passed to her pups via mother dog in their first few days of birth. Demodex mite is found in hair follicles and generallycause difficulties only in case adog has weak immune system. It is seen as patches of red, balding and scaly skin on the head, neck and forelegs.
  1. Incorrect Bites: incorrect bite is a case ofdistorted jaw structure that leaves the jaw misaligned. It causes difficulties with eating and grasping.
